Pakistan vs Bangladesh, 43rd Match, Friday 5 July

Pakistan vs. Bangladesh is one of the oldest rivalries in cricket history. Both sides have faced each other on multiple regional and international events. They’ve competed against one another in bilateral series, Asia Cup, ICC World Cup, ICC T20I World Cup and ICC Champions Trophy. Their rivalry is a result of the deep history that both the countries share. Bangladesh, which was once a part of Pakistan, ironically played its first ODI match against Pakistan in 1986. Even today, Pakistan Bangladesh competition provides a glimpse of their confrontation in the battlefield in 1971.

Pakistan vs. Bangladesh record in ODIs:

Pakistan and Bangladesh have crossed paths with each other at all international events. They are no strangers to each other’s techniques and gameplay. Pakistan have played a total of 879 ODIs winning 464 of them. Meanwhile, Bangladesh have a relatively weaker ODI performance only winning 118 out of their total 353 ODI contests. Both teams have faced off each other a total of 36 times in ODIs. Pakistan have won 31 times while Bangladesh was able to secure victory 5 times. There hasn’t been a single tie or no result in their matches. Numbers favor the Pakistan team and they might add another victory to their record in the WC. Defeating Bangladesh has rather been an easy task for Pakistan. Bangladesh have an underdog status since their debut and they would like to remove that tag. Perhaps the greatest victory of Bangladesh against Pakistan came in 1999 during the WC in England. Bangladesh managed to qualify for group stages and defeated a much seasoned Pakistani team which caused a major upset. Since then, Bangladesh has come close to beating Pakistan at several occasions but Pakistan have managed to claw their way to victory multiple times.

Pakistan vs. Bangladesh in WC 2019:

There has been a change in the tournament format in the recent WC. Previously, all teams were divided into two groups and teams of a similar group faced off each other before the semi-final stage. Now, each team is scheduled to face all other teams once in the first leg. Pakistan is scheduled to take on Bangladesh on 5th July 2019 at Lord’s Cricket Ground in London. Lord’s ground is widely referred to as the “Home of Cricket”. The ground is famous for its distinct slope across the field. The field causes appreciable deviation in bounce and swing of the ball. Ball swings differently when bowled from different ends. Lord’s ground has been host to 62 ODI matches. Lord’s ground pitch is mostly seam-friendly. Analysts usually suggest batting first on this wicket. Putting runs on the board can put pressure on the opposition. Pakistan has won almost all of their fixtures against Bangladesh. Bangladesh’s major option would be to win the toss and bat first. We know that Pakistan struggles while chasing. If Bangladeshi openers can get a good start, it will be hard for Pakistan to chase the score.

Looking at the stats, Pakistan is most likely to win this contest. Conditions at the Lord’s ground favor Pakistan’s pace attack. A lot would depend upon the toss. Pakistan have a win percentage of 86.11% against Bangladesh. Recently, Bangladesh defeated Pakistan in Asia Cup 2018 so that must be in the back of the minds of Pakistani players. Bangladesh would need to perform superbly against Pakistan otherwise this would be a rather easy win for Pakistan.
