Shoaib Malik has been a spectacular cricketer and an athlete throughout his entire career. He made his debut way back in 1999, he’s the only active player in the international circuit that made debut in the 20th century. He’s also been the captain of the Pakistan cricket team and has played many match winning knocks throughout his long carrier. He’s an all-rounder but nowadays his only focus is on the batting side seldom he renders his off spin services in international circuit now.
Domestic seasons and PSL
Born in 1982, in the city of Sialkot. Malik started domestic cricket in 1994 in Sialkot. He attended Imran Khan’s clinics. He started as a batsman then developed his off spin. He played county cricket as well later in his carrier. He captained Sialkot region and led the team to multiple trophies win. He was also approached by Gloucestershire cricket club and he played with them for several seasons.
In PSL, Malik has been captaining the Multan Sultan recently, the franchise is rather a new one and Sultan’s have failed to leave their mark in the first few outings. But Malik has remained consistent in his personal performance, his captaincy skills were tested thoroughly and he yet again proved to be a vigilant captain. In the first two seasons he was purchased by the Karachi Kings then he was inducted in the Multan Sultan’s squad. Throughout his career he has been a good player of spin bowling and mostly takes them to the cleaners. He struggles a bit against the short pitch fast bowling early on in his innings. But he has evolved as a cricketer and as an athlete, his fitness level has been exceptional hence the secret behind his fast running between the wickets.
Malik as a captain
Malik is known to be a very calm personality and he possess in built leadership skills. He has a great record as far as captaincy is concerned, winning percentage of over 70% is good for any captain. Though due to some clashes he was side lined for almost 5 years from the Pakistan cricket team, though during that time he remained vigilant and played for different clubs and teams throughout the world, he has represented over a dozen teams in different leagues all over the world.
Pre 2015 performance
Shoaib Malik scored most of his ODI centuries before the 2015 WC, he batted in the upper middle order then and scored bulk of his runs in that position. Malik was an all-rounder so in the start of his carrier he batted really low in the team even as low as number 10 which was a bit too low for his batting skills. Nevertheless once he secured his spot in the side then he eventually went up the order because of his batting capabilities.
Post 2015 performance
Shoaib Malik since his return after the five year gap from the international level has been performing really well with the bat, his batting average since making his comeback has been very high. He is an experienced and a good middle order batsman that the Pakistan team has been relying on for a long time now.
He averages in mid-thirties in batting in the ODI’s but his versatile way of batting and his calmness makes him a very key player in the team, along with his tons of experience in the batting his bowling is also very helpful, he has taken over 150 wickets in the ODIs. This makes him a very good all round cricketer. He has made around 10 ODI centuries as well. He along with Hafeez are the only two experienced players in the Pakistan cricket team. They both bring stability and calmness on the middle order.
Malik announced his retirement from the test cricket in 2015 after making a double hundred in his last series to focus on the shorter format. By doing so he focused on ODI and T20 cricket and his stats have improved after that, after 2015 he has been one of the leading scorers of Pakistani batsmen.
In England though his performance has been a bit shaky but his guidance is required for the younger lot to succeed in the foreseeable future.
